Pagode - a definition:
- Pagode are popular party-style gatherings where the samba originated, and where the young and old hone their musical skills.
The atmosphere is totally casual - often around a table. Musicians play and take turns, listeners join in singing, people dance, often without a break until dawn - forgetting troubles and celebrating life.
-
A Roda de Samba is its more traditional parent where samba (and nothing else) rules supreme. Pagode often includes more commercialised newer songs and the samba arguably is often less sophisticated. Our LSS "Top 30 Pagode Song Book" actually contains mostly sambas. More typical pagode songs included are for example songs by Zeca Pagodinho (as the name suggests). For simplicity, let's call our sessions 'Pagode' - it seems to be much in use.
-
The term seems to be used by different people/groups meaning perhaps slightly different things.

- The most typical instruments for a pagode:
Pandeiro, Cavaquinho, Tamborim (played with a light wooden stick), Tan Tan, Cuica, Ganza (shaker).
