For their 25th Anniversary, the London School of Samba will be welcoming guests from Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel!

Introduction

For our very special season of carnival activity ahead, Unidos de Londres are inviting five top class artists from our Madrinha (Godmother) samba school in Rio de Janeiro, 'Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel'. Mocidade is one of the Grupo Especial (highest league) samba schools in Rio; their work has been hugely influential to the development and education of samba throughout Europe and all over the world. The London School of Samba was established in 1984 as the first samba school in the UK; they were set up to pay homage to Mocidade, taking on their school colors of green and white. This significant landmark project not only signifies a celebration of 25 years of samba in the UK, but also looks to the future of Brazilian culture in the UK. Here's to the next 25 years of samba in the UK!!

The History of the Madrinha relationship

By Mags

1984 — Mocidade becomes Madrinha of the LSS

G.R.E.S. Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel became the patrons of the LSS in August 1984.

When the LSS was formed in 1984, it was on the suggestion of João Bosco de Oliveira, the schools first Musical Director, that musically the bateria should be based on Mocidade, and in their honour, the school adopt the colours of green and white.

Thus in August 1984, the then LSS Administrator, Alan Hayman, wrote to Mocidade asking them to be the Madrinha of the LSS, and inviting them to join the LSS for its first Carnival parade. Mocidade wrote back soon afterwards “with much emotion” saying first they could not make it for Carnival, but that it would be an honour for Mocidade to be the Madrinha of the LSS. They added that they would come to London in the future and baptise the school.

The first Carnival parade and samba enredo (written by Bosco) in 1984 was under the theme “Homage to Mocidade”. In the samba enredo, the following tribute was paid to them and their legendary Mestre André:

E homenageia a Mocidade de Padre Miguel
Tatu, Nezinho e outros tantos
Que são, de uma ala fiel

E o saudoso Mestre André
Que foi o rei da bateria
E a toda Mocidade Independente
Onde se samba de noite e da dia

1989 — Mocidade baptise LSS

However, it would not be until 1989 that Mocidade came to London — and became the first Rio Samba School to visit the UK. This was when the LSS, through Alan Hayman and Pat Till, organised the 3rd Samba Encontro in London. This involved some shows in Jubilee Gardens and the Royal Festival Hall plus a parade with Mocidade leading from Covent Garden to County Hall over Westminster Bridge. Many other samba schools from all across Europe also participated.

It was at one of their shows in the Royal Festival Hall, that Mocidade presented their flag to the LSS and baptised it. The flag was accepted by Pato Fuentes, the then Musical Director (see picture). When Mocidade left, they also donated some costumes, which were used by the LSS in subsequent years. The flag they presented to the LSS was used in Carnival parades until 2001.

On 27th February 1990, Channel 4 screened a film of the encontro on UK television. A film of the encontro made by LSS member Sebastian Jenkins was given to the LSS archive in 2009. This shows the parade with Mocidade and a film of one of their gigs on the Southbank. Thanks to Yas Sami and Jose Nogueira, the LSS now has a substantial photographic archive of this event.

Bosco told Mags that in the period after the encontro, a song paying tribute to the LSS and Mocidade was written in Brazil. I haven't been able to identify who recorded this song, but l presume it was either by Mocidade, or someone very closely connected with them:

Peço o papai do ceú pelo Unidos de Londres e a Mocidade de Padre Miguel
I pray to our father in heaven for Unidos de Londres and Mocidade de Padre Miguel

In 1990, the LSS launched a campaign to collect clothes to send to favela children in Rio da Janeiro via Mocidade.

In 2002, Mags interviewed Bosco and told him how the link has been made. He also donated valuable documents relating to the link to our archive, notably copies of the original correspondence with Mocidade. It was Bosco who urged the LSS from this point onwards to contact Mocidade again and renew the link with our Madrinha.

In 2004, Mags & Hamish Orr visited Rio and met Mestre Bira of Mocidade in Rio who told them of the "togetherness" of the two schools. In the same year for the 20th anniversary of the LSS, Bosco wrote the samba enredo and in it referred again proudly to our "Madrinha Mocidade":

Quebra e requebra
Bate forte o samba veio pra ficar
A nossa escola e a primeira e não pode calar,
O nosso samba e jovem mas não tem idade
E pede a benção da Madrinha Mocidade

2009 — Mocidade join LSS for 25th anniversary celebrations

In February 2007, the then LSS Administrator Lauren Baker, travelled to Mocidade's quadra (base) in Rio to hand over to Mocidade's President, Patilo Vianna, an official invitation to re-establish this relationship. The invitation was warmly welcomed and accepted.

In May 2007, Mestre Jonas did a special workshop for the LSS in City University and visited our workshops in the Waterloo Action Centre afterwards. During his visit he said:

The London School of Samba and Mocidade are family — we are all like brothers and sisters

In December 2008, the Mocidade project Ambassador in Brazil, Maria Cecilia Barker, organised a groundbreaking meeting with Mocidade's President. Having received Mocidade's official letter of acceptance to visit us here in the UK. In November 2008, a team of volunteers was elected to help with the project work, and funding to support the project was confirmed by the LSS Management shortly afterwards. Lauren was appointed in 2009 to bring about this project, which resulted in Mocidade visiting the LSS in August and September 2009.

Five members of Mocidade came over to join the LSS for a series of gigs in Guanabara, the Notting Hill Carnival and the Thames Festival. Mocidade also did a two-day drum and dance workshop in London following Carnival. They included the Porta Bandeira and Mestre Sala, Cristiane Caldas and Fabricio Pirez, and from the bateria, Mestre Robson, William do Tamborim and Bruninho do Repique.

The visit was a great success — with the LSS coming 1st in the samba category, and 3rd overall in the main parade of the Notting Hill Carnival. It was a great honour for the LSS to have Mocidade over for our 25th anniversary and we hope that we can repeat this again soon in the future.
