Evelyn Glennie and LSS Musicians Rock the Royal Festival Hall...Literally!

The London School of Samba was excited to take part in 'Bang on the Hall', a unique performance at the Royal Festival Hall with the School's patron Evelyn Glennie in July 2004. The South Bank Centre had commissioned world famous percussionist Evelyn Glennie to devise a unique new piece of music to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Rhythm Sticks Festival. Under Evelyn's direction, the Royal Festival Hall foyers and contents were transformed into a massive battery of percussion. Evelyn and the LSS were joined by composer Tim Steiner.

Musicians appeared from all corners of the hall to an electronic soundtrack by Mercury nominee MJ Cole, and began grooving on tables, chairs, bannisters, and anything else they could find. Community groups including the Blackfriars Settlement, Creative Routes, Waterloo Action Centre and the South Bank Centre were led by musicians from the LSS. The sound became louder and louder, until the groups reached the centre of the foyer, when Evelyn began to perform on an amazing array of percussion instruments in a stunning finale. The crowd was captivated!

Many thanks to Evelyn Glennie, Tim Steiner, MJ Cole and the South Bank Centre, Daisy Sutcliffe and the LSS musicians: Rob Mair, Fred Turuka, Mick Pyke and Dave Anthony.

Cue rapturous applause! The Royal Festival Hall tea urn may have suffered some damage...
